Hair loss can have a significant impact on a person's confidence and self-esteem. Not only can it be a challenging, and isolating experience, but it can be life changing for those experiencing the loss.
Supporting someone experiencing hair loss can make a world of difference.
I have been extremely lucky to have supportive friends, family and partners over the last 21 years. They have encouraged me to try new styles, talk openly about how I’m feeling and have tried to find different ways of supporting me, during all stages of my hair loss journey.
While you may not ever fully understand what your friend or family member is going through, being there for them and allowing them to confide in you can really help.
Here are some tips on how to support someone with hair loss:
- Listen and validate their feelings: While Hair Loss can be a sensitive topic, it's essential to be there for your loved one and listen to how they're feeling without any judgment. Be sure to listen to what they are saying without interrupting or offering solutions. Show empathy and understanding. Ask questions to clarify if needed. Let them know that how they’re feeling is valid, and that you’re there to support them.
- Avoid downplaying their experience: Don't try to minimize your friend's hair loss by saying things like "It's not that bad" or "It's just hair." Everyone experiences hair loss differently, and your friend's experience is valid regardless of how it compares to others.
- Educate yourself: Learn more about Alopecia and the different types of hair loss. This can help you better understand what your loved one is going through and how you can support them.
- Offer practical support: This could include accompanying them to medical appointments (Dermatology, Family Doctor, Naturopath, etc) helping them find a good wig or headscarf(in person or online)or even assisting with their new daily routine (helping with gluing down the wig, styling, etc).
- Be patient: Hair loss can be long-term, and it often takes time to adjust, and cope with the loss of hair. Your friend will experience highs and lows, and it’s important to be patient and supportive throughout the process.
With your love and support, your friend or family member will be able to feel more confident when navigating the world of hair loss.
My friends, family and partners have wiped my tears, have cried with me, have reassured me, have been my biggest cheerleaders, and have always listened. They also encouraged me to connect with other women within the hair loss community. Without the support of my friends and family, my hair loss journey could have and WOULD have been completely different.
