Tips on How to Extend the Life Span of Your Wig

One of the questions we get asked the most is “how long does a human hair wig last”… and truth be told, it’s hard to give an exact lifespan for each piece, as it really boils down to how you care for your wig.

Human hair wigs require proper care and maintenance to keep them looking natural and fresh over time.

While we can’t give the exact expiry date for a wig, what we can do is give some tips on how to extend the life span of your wig.

First, make sure that you’re properly storing your wig. When you're not wearing your wig, it's important to store it properly to protect it from damage. A wig stand or mannequin head is ideal for storing your wig, as it will help to maintain the shape and style of your wig. However, if you don’t have a wig stand, you can also store your wig in a satin bag and keep it in a cool, dry place.

Secondly, ensure you wash your wig regularly, but don’t overdo it! As a general rule, you should wash it every 20-30 wears. Make sure to use a salon grade, sulfate free shampoo, and cool water to wash your wig.

Be sure to rinse your hair thoroughly to remove all of the shampoo.

At Bijoux, we use salon hair coloring products to create our pieces, so over time a color refresh may be necessary. Using the washing instructions above will also keep your color looking it’s best!

Then, apply a salon grade conditioner. However, ensure to avoid using conditioner near the knots as conditioning them will cause them to loosen. Make sure to rinse out all conditioner before letting the hair air dry overnight.

Thirdly, if you use heat to style your wigs, ensure you are using a salon grade heat protectant to minimize damage.

Spray a generous amount of heat protectant on your wig before styling and allow it to dry.

Do not use heat on wet hair. Be sure that you are using the lowest setting for heat when styling!

For hair oils, use a couple times a week but don’t use too much.
If you use too often, these products can create a barrier that blocks moisture from entering the hair shaft.

If you are choosing to use adhesive tape or glue (Ghostbond, Got2b, etc), ensure that you also use an adhesive solvent to remove your wig. Follow the directions on the bottle, and be sure not to rip off the wig before the adhesive/glue has lifted. Ensure to clean your wig after each wear in order to avoid build up, as this can cause the knots to loosen, as well as expand over time.

It’s also important to know that using adhesives can shorten the life span as well or cause the lace to stretch over time, so please be careful if using these products. Using a hair grip or wig cap are great alternatives to glue.

We strongly recommend rotating between at least two wigs (either a hat wig, pony wig, lace front or synthetic) to minimize wear on a particular wig.
