This afternoon while going through a box in the back of my childhood closet, I stumbled upon my very first Raquel Welch topper.
It was only the second piece I had ever purchased after wearing a wig for 2 years and then transitioning to bonded pieces for 3 years during high school.
I was kind of surprised when finding the topper, as it’s still in like new condition. Despite having bangs cut into it, it looks like it just came off the shelf or out of the box (box hair included).
However, at the same time, I’m not surprised, because toppers for me were very frustrating! After having worn bonded pieces for so long, it was hard to adjust to a piece that was only held on by 4 clips.
Blending for me felt impossible, especially as I felt the topper would change position throughout the day, and I never felt it was as secure as I would have liked.
Therefore, I transitioned to wearing wigs quite quickly - which was partially for comfort as well as due to my hair falling out faster than I would have liked, and without any warning!
That being said, preference for wigs over toppers can vary depending on individual needs and preferences.
There are a few differences between the two.
First, Wigs generally cover the entire head, providing a complete transformation and full coverage for hair loss or style change.
Where as Toppers, are designed to blend with existing hair and provide targeted coverage for specific areas of hair loss.
The choice between wigs and toppers often comes down to personal comfort, desired look, and level of hair loss.
Some people find wigs more convenient and versatile, while others prefer the natural integration that toppers offer. It ultimately depends on what works best for each individual.
From my own experience, I found wigs much easier to deal with, as I no longer had to factor in the time to blend and didn’t find myself getting frustrated in the mornings or before a big event because I could just “slap on my hair” and go.
If my hair ever grew back, I wouldn’t be opposed to giving toppers a second chance, however, I truly love the freedom wigs give me!
